We live in a fast-paced world of technology, where innovation knows no bounds, therefore, it is crucial we focus on empowering women in tech. However, according to a Government report, January 2024, for the DDaT Women in Tech Programme, there still remains a massive gender gap in the industry. The report states that, in 2023, women accounted for only 23% of the technology workforce, which consisted of 15 to 20 million people. Additionally, women hold just 5% of leadership positions. The industry needs to re-dress the balance.

However, women in tech face personal growth hurdles too. As a result, they are often holding themselves back from progressing. Let's explore these challenges and discover how to overcome them, allowing women to shape the future of technology.


Challenges


From battling imposter syndrome to balancing family life and navigating menopause, the personal challenges women face can sometimes feel overwhelming. However, amidst these demands, a reservoir of inner confidence awaits to be unleashed. Let’s investigate some key personal barriers that many women face in their career:


Industry Mindsets


Inequality in the workplace sadly is still a reality. From unequal pay gaps, to institutionalised gender discrimination (both consciously and unconsciously), women can face an uphill struggle to make their mark. Unfortunately, both society and ingrained human psychological wiring judge men differently from women. This distinction is particularly evident in male-dominated industries like technology. The results can be a lack of female role models and inspiring mentors and less growth opportunities.

In a report by Deloitte entitled ‘Women @ Work 2023’, out of 5,000 women surveyed (88% working full-time), nearly half stated they have the primary responsibility for domestic chores. This included household and caring roles. Only 10% stated that this responsibility fell to their partner. It is inevitable, therefore, that the double burden of following a career in tech and balancing family life remains a significant challenge for many women.


A need for more flexible working hours, plus less desire to move geographically for career progression, often deters women from developing their career in the industry. Indeed, in the same ‘Women @ Work 2023’ report, 97% women believe asking for flexible working arrangements could significantly impact their chance of promotion. However, indications show, that for those women offered flexible working hours, two-thirds planned to stay with their employer for more than 3 years. Compare that to just 19% who are offered no flexibility at all!


Menstruation and Menopause


Menstruation and menopause can significantly impact a woman's career in the tech industry. Menstrual cycles can bring about physical discomfort and hormonal fluctuations, affecting productivity and concentration levels. Women may also face stigma or discomfort discussing menstruation in a predominantly male workplace culture, leading to feelings of isolation or embarrassment.


Moreover, menopause, with its array of symptoms including hot flashes, mood swings, joint pains, insomnia and fatigue, can further disrupt work performance and confidence. The lack of awareness and support around menopause in the workplace can exacerbate these challenges, potentially leading to women feeling sidelined or undervalued in their careers. As a result, addressing the unique needs of women experiencing menstruation and menopause is crucial in fostering an inclusive and supportive environment where all employees can thrive.


Individual Mindset

Women often harbour negative thoughts. We can be our own worse critics! ‘I can’t do that’, ‘I’m not qualified enough’. Women underestimate their abilities and will often refrain from putting themselves forward for promotion. It’s as if women need to be perfectionists to progress, whereas a male colleague will apply even if he lacks the skills. This point is highlighted by Sheryl Sandberg, COO Facebook, in her book ‘Lean In’. In it she states that most men would apply for a position even if they only matched 60% of the criteria. However, women will only apply if they meet 100% of them!

A 2023 research paper by Gartner encourages technology leaders to optimise their employee value propositions (EVP) to meet the needs of women.  As the document states, ‘women working in technology…are most likely to be drawn to a role based on compensation, work-life harmonisation, health benefits, respect, location and career development.’ Likewise, The CRN, run annual Women in Channel Awards, to highlight the issue and encourage companies to develop a workforce that more accurately reflects society as a whole.
